The Maker Community will meet at the Maker Faire Vienna on June 3 and 4. Visitors can expect an extensive program of workshops and lectures. At Austria’s largest Do-It-Yourself festival in the METAStadt Vienna, there is something for everyone from young to old.
VIENNA/AUSTRIA, May 2023 - “The Maker Faire brings the Maker movement to life so that everyone can see and experience what Makers are doing in the first place and what projects they are implementing, “ says Dale Dougherty, who will be visiting Maker Faire Vienna for the first time this year. The American is known as the “Godfather of the Maker Movement”, founded Make Magazine and organized the first Maker Faire in 2006. Not only was he instrumental in the creation of the Maker Movement, but he also coined the term Web 2.0. “The Maker Faire is a showcase of creativity and ingenuity - it demonstrates what people can realize when they put their minds to something,” says Dougherty.
The program is diverse and colorful. There will be workshops on a wide variety of topics: from learning to solder to weaving to stop-motion video producing. In addition, Austrian and international speakers will give various lectures on the Maker Movement. There will be a special focus on the topics “Let’s make Fashion last - sustainable use of clothing” and “Circular Ideas for everyone - impulses for the circular economy”. The entire event program can be found on the website www.makerfairevienna.com.
We also have an extensive program for younger visitors. In a laser labyrinth, for example, children and daring adults can test their dexterity and feel like an agent,” says Joanna Kowolik, project manager of Maker Faire Vienna. “Those who feel like marveling at the universe can do so in an inflatable planetarium with 360-degree images. And at a rally designed by City Games Vienna, children and young people can gain insight into new technologies of the future at various stations - in keeping with this year’s motto ‘Makers for Future’. “ With a full stamp pass, participants have a chance to win the grand prize: their own Prusa Mini+ 3D printer.
Getting to the bottom of mistakes, repairing things and recycling recycled parts: these are important components of the Maker DNA. Under the guidance of repair experts Paul Srna and Wolfgang von Rueden, visitors can repair broken small appliances themselves with simple tools at a workshop on Sunday (3 to 5 p.m.). Household appliances (up to the size of a stick vacuum cleaner), toys or lamps are welcome to be brought along.
“Makers have a great ability to solve problems. Maker Faire can get young people involved and develop the skills and attitudes to help create a better future for all of us, “ summarizes Dale Dougherty, summing up the goal of Maker Faire Vienna 2023: to inspire and present innovative ideas and solutions for shaping the future.

Austria’s largest DIY festival offers a diverse program
On April 21, World Creativity and Innovation Day is celebrated. Maker Faire Vienna provides a platform for experimental DIY enthusiasts, creative minds, and technology enthusiasts of all ages.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA – The United Nations declared April 21 as World Creativity and Innovation Day to raise awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in all areas of human development. These are exactly the topics at the heart of Maker Faire Vienna. “We are Austria’s largest DIY festival. More than 900 makers will present their projects to a wide audience at Maker Faire Vienna,” explains Joanna Kowolik, project manager of Maker Faire Vienna. “It’s always very impressive to see how much creative potential people have.”
In addition to events with the same name in Paris, Hanover, and Rome, Maker Faire Vienna, which will take place on June 3 and 4, 2023, at METAStadt Vienna, is one of the largest Maker Faires in Europe. Under the motto “Makers for Future,” Maker Faire Vienna 2023 is dedicated to innovative ideas and solutions for shaping the future. What contribution can maker projects make to addressing the major challenges of our time? A special focus is on the topic of circular economy.
“With the focus on LET’S MAKE FASHION LAST!, we want to show the potential of the textile industry. And how much can be achieved globally when we start with this issue,” says Joanna Kowolik, project manager of Maker Faire Vienna. Projects that deal with the sustainable use of clothing are presented at lectures, workshops, and stands.
A second focus is on “CIRCULAR IDEAS FOR EVERYONE”. “Here, the aim is to present ideas and strategies that deal with the topic of circular economy in everyday life,” says Kowolik. In addition to the Common Space project “Circular Hub” by mostlikely and Materialnomaden, snorre will also be there, creating design objects from bulky waste. Happylab Wien sets up a repair café at Maker Faire. Visitors can repair their broken small appliances (e.g., coffee grinder, iron, mixer, radio alarm clock, power supply units, etc.) themselves with simple tools under professional guidance.
Joanna Kowolik is delighted to be able to hold Maker Faire Vienna again after three years of pandemic-related break: “We expect 10,000 visitors who will experience an exciting and creative weekend with us. There’s something for everyone - from young to old!”

The DIY festival offers a colorful program for all age groups.
At Maker Faire Vienna, Austria’s largest do-it-yourself festival, it’s all about “marveling, participating, trying it out!” on June 3rd and 4th, 2023, at the METAStadt Vienna. The children’s program has a lot to offer.
VIENNA/AUSTRIA - For a whole weekend, the Maker Faire Vienna offers soldering, programming, hammering, screwing, sawing, 3D printing, and sewing. At the interface between technology, art, science, and craftsmanship, innovative and creative projects are made accessible to the public, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to experiment and try things out. “We want to inspire children and young people in a creative and playful way for science, technology, and the creative handling of various materials and tools,” explains Joanna Kowolik, project manager of Maker Faire Vienna. “Fun is definitely the focus of our comprehensive children’s program.”
In a laser maze, children and brave adults can test their dexterity and feel like an agent. The mobile laser maze was developed by Jakob Schindler-Scholz (www.laserlabyrinth.at) during the first lockdown for his then 4-year-old son. He thought: if you have to stay at home anyway, you should at least turn the children’s room into an adventure playground. The self-developed laser and sensor mounts for it come from the 3D printer. Those who want to admire the universe can do so in an inflatable planetarium with 360-degree images.
At workshops by Vienna Hobby Lobby (www.hobbylobby.co.at) and RoboManiac, participants can try their hand at stop motion and robotics. At the stand of Garten(Bau)Wissen, you can learn how to promote insects/wild bees in your own outdoor area (garden or balcony) properly and sensibly. You can even build your small insect hotels on-site.
And at the upcycling station of the Upcycling Werkstatt (kamakoma.eu), children can make small play furniture for their toy figures at home from fruit nets, yogurt cups, corks, fabric remnants, tea packaging, and much more.
In addition, there will be a rally designed by City Games Vienna (www.citygames.wien). At different stations, children and young people should get insight into new technologies of the future, according to this year’s Maker Faire Vienna motto, “Makers for Future.” With a full stamp pass, you have the chance to win the grand prize: a Prusa Mini+ 3D printer.
In advance of Maker Faire Vienna, we invite secondary schools and technical schools to various makerspaces, such as Happylab (www.happylab.at), throughout Vienna in May 2023. The aim is to inspire school classes at “Mini Maker Faires” on site for innovation, new technologies, and new fields of work. Maker Faire for School is funded by the Vienna Business Agency.
The interest is high: all dates are already fully booked. However, we still have a contingent of 500 free tickets for interested school classes (from secondary schools and technical schools in Vienna) for the event on June 3rd and 4th, 2023.
